A team can finish third and still reach the knockouts, so final group games can stay chaotic even outside first and second.
Twelve teams finish third. Eight qualify for the Round of 32 and four fall below the tournament cut.
Third-placed teams are compared across all groups using their full group-stage results.
Tiebreaker stack
Third-placed teams are ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, team conduct / fair play score if available, and FIFA ranking if still tied. Some tiebreakers may update when official data becomes available.
Qualification examples
A third-placed team with six points is usually in a strong position because at least four other third-place teams must beat that total or tiebreaker profile.
Four points can be enough, but goal difference and goals scored become tense because teams from every group are compared together.
Three points or a negative goal difference can still survive in unusual scenarios, but the team needs help across other groups.
Top eight advance. Bottom four are outside the cut. Table updates from synced standings.
